Latent semantic indexing is just another piece of the algorithm, though many sites will significantly shift in rankings due to it. LSI or Latent semantic indexing allows a search engine to determine what a page is about outside of specifically matching search query text. LSI is a search engine Algorithm which is based on LSA or Latent semantic analysis. LSA is a technique in natural language processing, in particular in vectorial semantics.
LSA uses a term-document matrix which describes the occurrences of terms in documents; it is a sparse matrix whose rows correspond to documents and whose columns correspond to terms, typically stemmed words that appear in the documents or page. This patent contains very complex formulas describing the relationship between words. It explores data clustering, informational retrieval, document classification, natural language processing, polysemy, synonymy and more. In online web world, people hear about LSI for the first time and assume that it is a new thing that search engines are using but it was using already for the search engines. People did not know this matrix method for searching so now LSA is coming again in the form of LSI or Latent semantic indexing.
Many people have been noticing a large shuffle in search relevancy scores currently. Some of those well in the know attribute this to Latent Semantic Iindexing or LSI, which Google has been using for a while, but recently increased its weighting and Popularity.
